MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Sound Transit plans to begin work today on a bus station in the I-5 median in Mountlake Terrace.
The $40.9 million station will enable buses to more quickly pick up and drop off passengers using the Mountlake Terrace park-and-ride lot at 236th Street SW. The lot’s capacity was recently more than doubled with the addition of a $20 million parking garage by Community Transit. A pedestrian bridge will connect the bus platforms with the garage.
Currently, buses traveling southbound on I-5 must exit at 220th Street SW and make their way through downtown Mountlake terrace to reach the park-and-ride lot. Buses leaving the lot to go north on I-5 must do the same.
The station is scheduled to be finished in 2011. Nighttime lane closures will be needed during construction, with one two-day, full closure of all northbound lanes in late summer or in the fall of this year.
Sound Transit plans in 2011 to bring regional express bus service to Mountlake Terrace. The station also could eventually be used for light rail.
