TACOMA — The U.S. Geological Survey says there are signs that an earthquake fault that runs under south Whidbey Island is larger than previously thought.
Craig Weaver, regional USGS quake coordinator in Seattle, told The Tacoma News Tribune the fault may cross the Cascades and connect with other faults in Western Washington.
Magnetic surveys indicate the fault stretches between Victoria, B.C., and Yakima. Weaver says it could produce a magnitude 7.5 earthquake.
The USGS acting director, Suzette Kimball, told a House subcommittee Thursday it appears there is a large fault system in the Cascade arc.
