STANWOOD — The bright blue playground set has three slides, lots of ladders, a small suspension bridge and a giant ship’s wheel where children can steer as far as their imaginations can go.
The jungle gym is one feature of the $25,000 renovation at Stanwood’s Lions Park. The playground and park are set to reopen today.
“It looks wonderful,” city spokeswoman Devin Tokizawa said.
The park’s upgrades include a better basketball court, more trees and landscaping, a new picnic shelter and additional parking, she said.
In 2006, the City Council approved a plan to improve several city parks and trails, including Lions Park, a small neighborhood park on Park Drive.
A donation from Lowe’s helped pay for the park’s renovations.
Lions Park was given to the city in 1962 by the school district. At the time, the Stanwood Lions Club planned to build a public swimming pool there, Tokizawa said.
Because of a lack of money, the pool was never built. But the legacy of the Lions Club continues.
“The name stuck, so it’s been known since then as Lions Park,” she said.
Today, Mayor Dianne White, several city council members and representatives from Lowe’s plan to dedicate the park.
The short ceremony is open to the public and is expected to begin at 5:30 p.m.
