EVERETT — Owners of the Royal Motor Inn on N. Broadway in Everett have until Sunday to clear the motel of guests, following state action to suspend its license.
The alleged problems found by state Department of Health inspectors at the 35-unit motel include inoperable smoke detectors, mold, unsafe wiring and unsanitary conditions.
The operators of the inn, listed in state documents as Un Duk and Joon Young RA, could not be reached for comment Wednesday evening.
The business has 28 days to contest the charges.
The state health department sent inspectors to the motel at 952 N. Broadway on April 21 after receiving a complaint about conditions there this spring, said spokesman Donn Moyer.
Inspectors followed up on problems cited by Everett officials during an inspection last year, Moyer said.
“This place has had problems,” Moyer said, adding that the city closed part of the motel in May of last year. The state didn’t take action then, he said, because it would have duplicated actions taken by the city.
When state officials found that some of the problems discovered last spring had not been corrected, “we decided that we better protect the guests who end up there,” Moyer said.
The state agency moved to suspend the motel’s license Monday. The action was announced Wednesday afternoon.
Motels that operate three or more units for customers to stay for less than 30 days must be licensed by the state.
This is the 10th time this year that the state has taken some sort of legal action against one of the 1,700 motels and hotels in Washington.
“They’re almost all a result of sort of complaint from city officials, police or guests,” Moyer said.
Typically the state takes action against about a dozen motels each year.
The public can contact the agency’s hotline at 800-633-6828 with complaints.
“It’s important to us that if something is not working right in the system, people let us know so that we can take action when necessary,” Moyer said.
