Don Holt of Mukilteo wondered about the newly painted lane striping as you exit Highway 526 to head northbound on Evergreen Way.
There are two lanes that allow eastbound drivers to turn left onto northbound Evergreen Way, feeding into three northbound lanes (plus a left-turn lane for those wanting to get back on the Boeing Freeway westbound).
A dashed white line guides drivers in the left-most left-turn lane toward either the left or center northbound lanes. The other left-turn lane is directed to the far right-hand lane of Evergreen.
“Why was it striped this way?” Holt wondered.
Everett traffic engineer Tim Miller said the striping allows for big rigs to more easily make the turn into the inner lanes of Evergreen Way. The outer lane already has a large turn radius for trucks.
“Decisions as to how to lay out intersection channelization are always on a case-by-case basis,” Miller added. “This particular treatment was also used at the intersection of Airport Road and Kasch Park Road … for similar reasons.”
