Suspicious fire destroys vacant Camano mobile home

CAMANO ISLAND – A mobile home was destroyed by a suspicious fire Sunday.

A neighbor called about 11:30 a.m. Sunday to report a fire at 1352 Pilchuck Drive in the Camano Vista area.

The mobile home was a rental and hadn’t been occupied for months, Island County sheriff’s spokeswoman Jan Smith said Monday.

Firefighters from Camano Island Fire and Rescue extinguished the blaze.

Anyone who noticed anything suspicious is asked to call the sheriff’s tip line at 360-629-4523, ext. 7319.

Lynnwood: Suspected bank robber in custody

A man believed to be responsible for robbing the Prime Pacific Bank last month is behind bars.

The bank, located at 4710 196th St. SW, was robbed April 26. The suspect passed a note to a teller demanding cash and made off with an undisclosed amount of money.

Two days later police released surveillance video of the suspect to TV stations, Sgt. Sean Doty said. That night police received a tip about the suspect’s identity and traced him to West Seattle.

Detectives learned he was in the King County Jail for an unrelated charge. He was booked into the Snohomish County Jail on Friday for investigation of first-degree robbery.

Everett: State trooper reunites duck family

A State Patrol trooper reunited a stray duckling with its mother and three siblings Monday.

The trooper saw the mother duck and three ducklings crossing the road near Highway 527 and El Capitan Way. A fourth duckling sat in the middle of the road, too frightened to move.

The trooper parked in the lane next to the duckling and activated the lights on his patrol car. He scooped up the duckling and carried it off to the shoulder of the road, where its family was waiting. Mother and ducklings waddled off into the brush.

Child killed when truck ran him over

A 22-month-old boy who died Friday night in Marysville was identified Monday as Tyler Joel Shaffer.

The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office reported that the cause of death was an accidental blunt force injury to the head.

The sheriff’s office reported the boy died after a pickup ran over him at his home. The accident happened in the 10300 block of 59th Drive NE in Marysville.

Firefighters will check blood pressure for free

Firefighters from Snohomish County Fire District 1 will do free blood-pressure checks this week at local businesses.

Firefighters will be at the following locations from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on these dates:

* Today and Friday, Home Depot, 11915 Highway 99, Everett.

* Wednesday, Starbucks, 520 128th St. SW, Everett.

* Thursday, Food Emporium, 13619 Mukilteo Speedway, Lynnwood.

Free blood-pressure checks also are available year-round at all Fire District 1 stations.

The district serves about 150,000 residents in south Snohomish County and the cities of Mountlake Terrace and Brier.

Lake Stevens: Fire blamed on cigarette

A fire that destroyed a house and two vehicles was likely started by a discarded cigarette, fire officials said Monday.

The accidental fire started underneath a deck, deputy fire marshal Ed Hardesty said.

A passerby noticed flames about 12:30 a.m. Thursday coming from the house in the 1100 block of 18th Avenue NE. The residents escaped unharmed.
