EVERETT — Rush-hour traffic flowed easily this morning on southbound I-5 through Everett despite a new construction site springing up in the middle of the freeway, state officials said.
“I was glad to see things go smoothly,” said Patty Michaud, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation. “I think it was a little bit lighter than usual.”
The transportation department on Wednesday night closed a middle lane of the freeway to replace a girder that supports the I-5 bridge over Pacific Avenue. The lane closure will remain in effect for about eight weeks.
An island of the construction zone splits traffic, and speed limits in the area have been reduced from 60 mph to 50 mph.
“People weren’t slowing down,” Michaud said.
