MARYSVILLE — A modern-day good Samaritan has come to the aid of a local church in its time of need.
A trailer containing a giant yellow and white striped revival tent was stolen Saturday from Marysville Gospel Hall’s parking lot. The trailer and its contents, including the tent, poles, 95 chairs, speakers and a pulpit, reportedly are worth more than $30,000.
The 40-foot by 100-foot tent was to be used in a two-week revival event, where attendees sing hymns and listen to speakers. More than 27,000 invitations were sent.
A generous friend of the church has donated another revival tent for the event. The donor drove 16 hours from Calgary, Canada, to deliver it.
“It’s a smaller tent with fewer chairs, but it’s the same kind of setup,” Pastor Phil Kazen said.
The tent was packed up in a trailer with a lock, but Saturday afternoon a neighbor saw two men in a white truck with garden equipment hitching up the trailer to their pickup and driving off.
Kazen hopes that by getting the word out, the thieves will either return the trailer or leave it in a public location where it can be found. He thinks it’s unlikely they would have a use for it.
“People rent them out for weddings or family reunions,” he said. “(It) would be very hard to sell.”
The two-week event will take place 7 to 8 p.m. from July 29 to Aug. 12, excluding Saturdays. All are invited to attend. The event will have two evangelist speakers from Michigan and Illinois.
Marysville police are investigating the theft.
