VANCOUVER, Wash. — A new report shows the amount of trees covering the city of Vancouver, Wash., has dropped slightly from 2003 to 2010, mainly due to development.
City officials say the 4.3 percent drop in the face of major development pressures shows that it can reach its goal of having 28 percent tree canopy by 2030 through conservation and tree plantings.
The Columbian newspaper reported that the assessment shows the city’s canopy cover dropped to 18.6 percent in 2010, from 19.4 percent in 2003. The canopy cover is the percent of city that’s covered by trees, as seen in an aerial view. Most of the city’s tree cover is on private property.
