TULALIP — Members of the region’s Indian tribes arrived by canoe in Tulalip Bay Sunday afternoon as part of annual journey to a cultural festival the Makah Reservation at Neah Bay.
About 10 canoes stopped in Tulalip, said Brittany Olson, media coordinator for Tribal Journey 2010, the Paddle to Makah. Their goal is to reach the Makah Reservation on the tip of the Olympic Peninsula by July 19, for six days of cultural festivities and events, learning and family entertainment.
The event is in its 21st year. Each summer, as many as 100 canoes from U.S. tribes and Canadian First Nations participate in the Tribal Canoe Journey. The journey by cedar canoe honors a centuries-old custom of transport, harvest and trade by Coast Salish Tribes.
