Now is the time to order garlic for planting this fall. It’s relatively easy to grow here in the Northwest, and the squirrels won’t dig it up like they do with crocus corms. You need a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Plant in the fall and by spring green shoots are pushing out of the ground. By mid-summer the garlic is ready to be harvested. I’ve heard of people planting cloves from the grocery store but you’ll find many more interesting varieties in seed catalogs. One of my favorite online spots, Rainy Side Gardeners, features some good information on the finer points of selecting, planting and growing garlic. Take a look and give it a try this season.
