EDMONDS – A proposal to change the Stevens Hospital board for the first time in its 40-year history was passing in early election returns Tuesday night.
There was no organized opposition to the Hospital District 2 proposal, which would increase the size of the elected board from three to five members.
Commissioners would be better able to interact with the public and with each other with the change, supporters have said.
The population of the district – including Edmonds, Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace, Brier, Woodway and surrounding unincorporated areas – has increased fourfold since 1964. Under state public meetings rules, there is a quorum when just two members are present.
Commissioners are paid $70 per meeting or day of hospital business, up to $6,720 a year.
Current board members would select two additional people to serve with them until the November 2005 election.
