OLYMPIA — The state Department of Corrections has agreed to pay $4 million to a 24-year-old man who suffered disabling injuries in an attack by a cellmate in the state prison at Shelton.
Ryan Alwine was in a coma for nearly four months after the attack in September 2006.
Department Secretary Eldon Vail said the settlement will pay for medical care and rehabilitation Alwine will need for the rest of his life.
The prison said it has made changes to do a better job of screening and placing incoming inmates.
