Update: Thank you to everyone who has sent feedback about the new site. I’m trying to respond to everyone individually, but here are the answers to some of the more common questions:
If you’re reading this, you’ve noticed something different about HeraldNet.com. The site has gone through many changes in its 10 years of existence, but this is the biggest yet.
Many of you may have had trouble accessing articles and pages on HeraldNet over recent months, particularly during the morning and lunchtime “rush hours.” That’s because the site had outgrown our existing Web system. The new site should be more consistent and more reliable. We also hope you find it more useful.
I could go on and on about the changes, but here are some of the highlights:
What’s New
At the top of the home page, you will find links to some of our most popular pages: weather, Web cameras and obituaries. We also added a traffic page to help prepare for your commute.
We reorganized our lifestyle and entertainment sections to make it easier to find information on the topics that interest you. Our entertainment pages also now feature searchable movie listings with reviews from The Herald’s own Robert Horton.
We added new pages for Northwest news, politics coverage, schools information and stories from The Herald’s weekly Community Extra section. The Community Extra page is where you’ll find forms to submit calendar and good news items for that section.
What’s Different
In addition to some basic cosmetic changes, the top menu bar has changed. Gone is the “Home” link. To get to the home page from any page on the site, simply click the HeraldNet logo at the top of the page. Move your cursor over section names on the tan-colored part of the menu to see a drop-down list of related subcategories.
The “Towns” page has been renamed “Community,” but there you will still find links to news pages for each of 23 towns and areas covered by The Herald. We also added links to the town pages on the home page.
If you’re a regular reader of our Web logs (blogs, for short), you’ll notice one thing conspicuously absent: comments. We hope to add those soon, so stay tuned.
Can’t find something?
If you have trouble finding something on the new site, try our site map or our search page. You can also feel free to e-mail me or the rest of our HeraldNet team at webfeedback@heraldnet.com. We’d love to hear from you, even if it’s just to tell us what you think of the changes.
