SPOKANE — More than 500 athletes are expected to compete in the National Veterans Wheelchair Games this week in Spokane.
The competition is in its 19th year and runs from today through Saturday. It’s billed as the largest annual wheelchair sports event in the world, drawing entries from 42 states, Puerto Rico and Great Britain.
The games are sponsored by Paralyzed Veterans of America and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
A wheelchair basketball demonstration pitting some of the athletes against local media representatives and community officials is set for today, and the opening ceremonies are this evening at Veterans Memorial Arena.
The 17 events include competition in air guns, archery, basketball, bowling, power soccer, quad rugby, softball, swimming, pingpong, track, trapshooting and weightlifting.
