Youths accused of burglarizing Snohomish pair

SNOHOMISH – Snohomish police have arrested five juveniles who nearly ruined a couple’s summer vacation when they allegedly stole their passports, U.S. citizenship papers and airline tickets.

Four boys, who were arrested in the past two weeks, face charges of residential burglary. A girl was charged with acting as an accomplice. One of the five, as well as two adult relatives, was charged with possessing stolen property, Snohomish Police Department reports say.

The victims were a Vietnamese couple preparing for a trip back to Vietnam. They arrived home July 8 to find their identification missing, as well as $2,000, cameras, cell phones and a DVD player.

Snohomish Sgt. Fred Havener said one of the four boys lived nearby. They climbed a balcony to get into the apartment and stole a suitcase containing the documents, Havener said.

The cash, DVD player and cell phones have not been found.

However, police traced the identifying documents to people and pawnshops. The two Snohomish residents postponed their departure dates and finally left for vacation in August.

Oak Harbor couple hurt in collision with trailer

A Bellingham man driving north on Highway 20 on Whidbey Island on Tuesday lost control of his trailer, which swung into the southbound lane and collided with an oncoming car, injuring two Oak Harbor residents.

Leroy Cook, 66, and Margaret Cook, 61, were taken to Whidbey General Hospital in Coupeville. A Washington State Patrol spokesman said one of the Cooks suffered a broken leg and internal injuries, and the other suffered minor injuries.

David Ebenal, 56, who was towing the trailer with a 2001 Chevrolet pickup, was uninjured.

The accident happened about 12:30 p.m. near Frostad Road. Ebenal’s trailer came loose during the collision, spilling sheet metal across the highway and closing both lanes for about two hours, the State Patrol reported.
