Former Swedish surgeon gets license back — with restrictions

The state earlier found he intimidated subordinates, posing a threat to public health and safety.

SEATTLE — The Washington Medical Commission has reinstated, with restrictions, the medical license of a former Swedish Health surgeon.

The Seattle Times reports that the commission ruled July 5 that Dr. Johnny Delashaw must submit to three years of oversight and cannot be employed in a position of medical leadership.

The commission also ordered Delashaw to pay a $10,000 fine and agree to be evaluated for disruptive behavior.

The commission suspended Delashaw’s license in May 2017, saying he posed an “immediate threat to the public health and safety.”

The commission said Delashaw had intimidated subordinates, creating a climate where staff members were reluctant to ask questions needed to properly care for patients.

Delashaw resigned as chair of the Swedish Neuroscience Institute in May 2017 after he was featured in a Seattle Times investigation which documented a range of internal concerns about patient care.
