YAKIMA — A 29-year-old woman who was evicted from a Yakima motel is accused of setting a fire that caused more than $100,000 in damages.
The Yakima Herald-Republic reports that the woman, who is homeless, is in Yakima County Jail on investigation of arson and malicious mischief. She was scheduled to make a court appearance Monday.
According to an affidavit by Yakima police, the Friday morning blaze spread from a dumpster to the roof of a one-story building. Motel guests were evacuated from the property.
Authorities say surveillance video shows the suspect crouching behind the dumpster shortly after 7 a.m., and then the dumpster going up in flames as she left.
A motel employee said the woman and her father were recently evicted from the motel. The worker told them to leave the property before the fire broke out.
