A few people are giving it a bad name

I would like to respond to the article The Herald published on Oct. 15 about the Snohomish Community Food Bank (“Fighting for the fringes”). I feel it was far too much one-sided, as the clothes that are given away come under the Community Food Bank, not a separate organization. How can anyone imagine that our food bank should give clothes or food to everyone who walks into the food bank because we are there?

Every community has their food bank and if they wish to give away clothes for their community, that is their privilege. We would be more than happy to share clothes with them.

We have always been a community food bank and, as all organizations, we have rules and regulations to go by. This is about how to serve our community, though that’s not to say we won’t help others if they come in an emergency. We try to share what we have with other food banks and they with us.

Our food bank was built by Snohomish community volunteers for the Snohomish School District community.

There are no paid people working at the food bank as reported. We are all volunteers including the board members.

This was brought on by a few volunteers that thought they would not follow the by-laws of our community food bank rules. It was suggested to them they could start a program of their own if they wished to hand out free clothes and the food bank would give them clothes, at a different location.

I have been associated with the Snohomish Community Food Bank for about 15 years, and I don’t like a few people trying to give it a black eye. I am very proud of the Snohomish Community Food Bank and the people who help make it a success.

The sweeping measure Senate Republican leaders hope to push through has many unpopular elements that they despise. But they face a political reckoning on taxes and the scorn of the president if they fail to pass it. (Kent Nishimura/The New York Times)
