On March 9 we will be voting on a four-year levy for the Granite Falls School District. In the past, our community has strongly supported our kids by voting yes and passing our levies.
We will be voting on two equally important portions of the levy – they are the program and operation levy and capital levy for technology and school improvement. This money helps us keep our good teachers here, buy textbooks, continue extra-curricular activities, maintain fields and buildings (our investments), transport our kids safely, continue staff development and technology upgrades, just to name a few.
Our school board and administration continue to try to provide these things at a minimum cost to us. They have been able to keep the levy amount at the same level for the last two renewals we voted on and are only increasing it this time by 10 cents per $1,000 assessed value. We have the lowest per student spending rate around. With the slight increase we will still be toward the bottom of the scale compared to other districts in the Puget Sound area but will be able to continue to provide and improve our schools for our children.
Please understand this is not a new tax. We are renewing an existing tax. Think of it like your household budget for necessities. We cannot live without paying for our groceries, power and water, just as our schools cannot provide some basic necessities without levy money. It is so important to continue to support our kids in their education. Their success depends on it.
Please remember to vote yes on March 9 or mail in your ballots by then.
