President George W. Bush has conclusively proven that he is a true “compassionate conservative.”
The 30-month jail sentence dealt to the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, Scooter Libby, for lying to federal prosecutors about the “outing” of CIA agent Valerie Plame, was excessive in the eyes of our president. He promptly commuted it.
Now, if my memory serves me correctly, this same George W. Bush, as Texas governor, never once commuted or delayed a death sentence appeal placed on his desk. Apparently a death sentence was never excessive, but a 30-month jail sentence for a friend is.
One only can speculate about how quickly a full pardon will be issued by Mr. Bush for V.P. Dick Cheney, or himself, when the deceptions, lies and outright crimes of either are finally laid bare, though it will be tough to get past the secrecy that hides them all.
Yet one thing is clear: compassion overflows, especially for those closest to this president.
