The Arlington Airport had better wake up because it is an “endangered species,” unless it has an iron-clad covenant on the entire area.
As someone who has been in the aviation business for more than 50 years, I have seen many, many airports all over the country lose the battle to housing developments. Even well-established military installations are having trouble in some metropolitan areas. Martha Lake airport is the latest small airport to go under in our area.
Under the Growth Management Act, the 700-plus acres could turn into in excess of 5,000 homes right under the airport flight pattern. There would be no such problem with the NASCAR track. All of these race drivers would fly in from North Carolina on Thursday and usually leave right after the race. The vast majority of them would go into Paine Field. Most of the larger race teams have a team plane.
