Regarding the Monday article, “Inmates with mental illness bring extra costs to Monroe prison”:
I have a suggestion to acquire some of the funds needed to help those inmates with expensive care.
1. Expedite death penalties immediately for everyone on death row. The cost of their care can go to others and it opens up more beds.
2. Administer the death penalty once a first-degree murder conviction has been obtained. This also cuts the cost of long-care expenses and sends a message to future convicts.
3. Consider death penalties for repeat child rapists who have served their time, been released and do it again. This spares emotional trauma of possible victims.
Instituting the death penalty for all murders not only saves money immediately but in the future as well, because it will deter future criminals when they realize the penalty is swift and sure.
