Arlington churches objecting to Pride should reread Jesus’ words

In the recent article (“Arlington churches waged covert ‘battle’ against Pride event, records show,” The Herald, June 22), I was just astounded at what evangelical preachers are saying. They are quoting Old Testament passages to justify their lack of tolerance for LBGTQ+ individuals.

According to the article, “Scripture is super clear,” (Arlington Lifeway Pastor Chad) Blood preached in May 2022. “In Leviticus 20:13 (Old Testament), it says if a man has sexual relations with a man as he does a woman, both of them have done what is detestable and they are to be put to death.” Pastor Blood should be ashamed of himself for citing this passage to condemn the Pride event.

I always thought Christian pastors, especially evangelicals, lived their faith primarily by the New Testament. Apparently not. So as a reminder, here are some New Testament passages for Pastor Blood and his brethren to consider: “Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned” (Luke 6:37); “Why do you show contempt for your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.” (Romans 14:4,10).” “Therefore, accept one another, just as Christ also accepted us to the glory of God.” (Romans 15:7).

Jesus Christ taught tolerance, love and compassion. Full stop. Those who refuse to believe that and use Old Testament passages to justify intolerance for our friends taking part in Gay Pride parades should not call themselves “Christian.”
