As Americans, we must do better

Trump isn’t even president yet and I find that I am a member of the “socialist cesspool.” (Letter, “Let election stand as warning for left, media.”) Sinclair Lewis said that “When fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and waiving the cross.” Add that it will have a Glock strapped to its hip and we have America today.

As for the revolution, fascists don’t have revolutions. They have coup d’état. This one was sponsored by Big Brother (big multinational corporations) and was facilitated by the economic 1-percenters. And only they will benefit from our folly.

Under our fascist overlords, we will have intimidation, character assassination and scapegoating. We will be divided into minorities and be blamed for anything the fascists dislike. One by one, we will be rounded up persecuted and expelled or literally assassinated. Ask the Jews how that worked out in the 1930s. It will begin with immigrants, homosexuals and the disabled, progress to unionists, and intellectuals, and deteriorate into racial and religious oppression.

The revolution will start when the “socialist cesspool” has had enough; “Beware the wrath of a patient man.” During my life I have proudly represented my country as a soldier, an athlete and a teacher. And for this, I am relegated to the “cesspool.” I was disappointed in my country during the Clinton and Obama administrations. I was embarrassed for my country during the Bush administration. I’m not a Democrat, I’m not a Republican and I’m not a communist, I’m an American. And for the first time in my life I’m ashamed to say so. Shame on all of us. As Americans, we must be better than this.
