The America I grew up in looked a lot different than it does today. Saying Merry Christmas because it was the Christmas season was considered a normal and acceptable greeting. Not so in today’s politically correct environment. It’s a sad state of affairs when people of different faiths or no faith at all cannot receive such a greeting without being offended. If one were to say to me “Happy (you fill in the blank),” my knees will not shake nor will my sensibilities be tested. As an adult I can smile and take it as a positive gesture of good will. Have we devolved into a fear-driven “Big Brother’s watching you” society? Where will this nonsense take us? What will it take to get us back on the common-sense track?
It will be easy for me to say “Merry Christmas” to every one I see. It’s the Christmas holiday season, folks. If you want to say “happy holidays” around Christmas time, why not say “happy holiday” at the Fourth of July or Valentine’s Day, etc.? Why not just eliminate all references to all the names of our holidays in this great country of ours? Not me. Merry Christmas!
