Regarding the Thursday article, “Bible essay stirs trouble for teacher”: I want to thank The Herald for exposing Gary McDonald’s biases in the classroom. My wife is a public school teacher and I serve as a police officer. In our line of work, we know that we are more scrutinized than most other occupations. This means that common sense, an understanding of constitutional rights, and the ability to work with different types of people is an important aspect of our jobs. This is why I am appalled at what Mr. McDonald has been doing for years in his Lake Stevens High School classroom. He claims he had no intention of swaying religious opinion, teaching or endorsing religion. Then why state that he is an atheist? Why after stating he is an atheist, the next day prescribe an assignment that was offensive to Christians, Jews and other religions?
Why not hold McDonald accountable by suspending him? I am sure if I handed out Bibles to every drug dealer or suicidal person that I came into contact with I would be held more accountable than McDonald. I would receive a suspension to think about common sense. Give McDonald the time off to come up with a lesson plan titled, “A Time and a Place.”
