Like most people, once a year I receive an official notice of assessed of value from the county assessor’s office showing the market value of my home. There is very little information other than land value, home value and total. After doing some research I found for 11 years I had been paying taxes on 640 square feet of attic that the assessor called a second floor. That extra of footage amounts to $2,961 for the last four years alone.
I received a refund for that four-year period and with the gracious help from Laura Glover, laura.glover@snoco.org, at the assessor’s office I expect to be refunded for the previous years soon. I also found the blueprints for the home that I had built and lived in for 10 years prior to the one I am in now and found that I was overpaying for 196 square feet of home I did not have there, as well. In that case the appraiser added square footage to the floor plan.
I encourage everyone to check with the assessor’s office to be sure you are not paying for space you do not have, including commercial and industrial property.
