Recently I came within 2 feet of hitting a teen (or young man) riding a bicycle in Monroe as I turned off hospital road (179th Street) onto Beaton Street. The young man was zipping along 179th and crossing Beaton. He was wearing dark-colored clothing and although he had reflectors on the spokes of his bicycle, according to my daughter, I could not see them because of the sharp angle of his traveling south and my traveling north and the fact that it was early evening, dark, and not well lit on that part of the street across from the hospital.
Please, those of you who ride bikes after dusk, you are much thinner than a car on the street. Please, wear light clothing and a reflective belt across your chest, or a hat, or something that will help break through the darkness and shadows of nightfall.
I was so grateful that I had not turned that corner 5 seconds sooner. I really am an attentive driver, but this young man was in the shadows and I did not see him until he passed my left front fender. I thank God I did not hit him. Please, help us see you by not wearing dark clothing after dark. Wear a reflector that can make you more noticeable where street lights are not very bright.
