Regarding John Sleeper’s Aug. 23 column, “Don’t direct all your ire at Falcons’ Vick”:
I feel badly for anyone (girlfriend, wife or child) who depends on the good nature or sobriety of someone else for their own happiness and safety. However, the pedestal on which these “men” are placed at the first sign of athletic ability contributes immeasurably to their abuse of power.
My first reaction, therefore, is that we have made them what they are. Also, not to put too fine a point on it, the “gangsta” mentality would be virtually impossible to escape. It has to have an effect on kids’ minds and morals. So the preceding theory is my one effort to cut Vick some slack.
Secondly, these females that Mr. Sleeper seems concerned for knew going in what was apt to happen. After all, they set their sights on catching a sports idol to live with. They can always pack up and leave. Kids and dogs can’t.
Indeed, Mr. Sleeper is probably right in thinking Michael Vick will play football again. I can only think of one football team owner who prides himself on hiring guys from the Island of Misfit Toys, but that is between him and whatever passes for his conscience.
We can make a concerted effort to stop those cretins. Refuse to buy a ticket to watch any game played that includes Michael Vick. We can make a difference.
