In response to Brian Kelly’s article about Paine Field (“Paine Field presentation irks Mukilteo,” Tuesday), I feel the readers should know that as of late last year, Alaska Airlines now contracts out its maintenance overhauls at Goodrich Corp. In order for that to happen, Alaska jets fly in for repair on a scheduled basis. Other aircraft also fly in for maintenance at Goodrich. Boeing also flies new aircraft on test flights before the final delivery is made.
Paine Field is a commercial airport and, in my opinion, should attract scheduled air service to those markets mentioned in Mr. Kelly’s article. Have the objectors to air service tried to commute down to Sea-Tac during a rush hour?
If Snohomish County does one day attract an airline, not only would it spur economic growth, it would also mean more jobs for the region. Corporations make decisions on where they locate based on factors such as ease of transportation. Imagine driving to Paine Field in 10 minutes, getting through security in 10 minutes and boarding your flight to California. That would be heaven for many people in this region, including people from North Seattle and Shoreline.
One last interesting side to this is what air service did for cities like Manchester, N.H. after Southwest started service there almost 10 years ago. The whole region northwest of Boston has grown and other airlines started service to Manchester. The same can be said for Providence, R.I. Many people in the Boston area only use Logan Airport now for long-haul flights to the West Coast or Europe. These satellite airports are so much more user friendly than the big city airports.
I have worked in the airline industry for almost 15 years now, and as an Everett resident I would love to see a carrier come in and start operations at Paine Field.
