Citizens shut out of major planning

How disappointing to find out now that the Port of Everett, Boeing, Gov. Gary Locke’s office and the Army Corps of Engineers have been working surreptitiously since last June on plans to build a 600-foot pier for Boeing at Edgewater Beach. This will destroy Everett’s only saltwater beach accessible by car. Everett citizens and the thousands of people who use Edgewater Beach, and have for 50 years, were denied any input on this inch-thick document. The claim of preliminarity of the reports rings hollow at its completeness.

This project and the SBX project are examples of how little government seems to think of its citizens and how little they think the citizens should know about their plans until a major portion of the planning is complete. Everett’s beaches, views and beautiful waterfront environment seem to be just development sites waiting for the next bidder. At no time during the many years of planning for the redevelopment of the Mukilteo Tank Farm has this kind of industrial use been suggested.

This pier for delivery of Boeing components is being considered for use supplying the existing airplanes being built, whether or not the 7E7 is ever built in Everett.

This study was paid for by “mitigation” money. Hopefully, our beaches and waterways are not for sale.
