I’m in agreement with the Monday letter, “Don’t let drinkers drive Turner out”:
How blessed the city of Snohomish is to have John Turner as its police chief. I knew him while a Mountlake Terrace activist protecting our parks from being sold and de-treed, and we butted heads many times over the building of our city police station. He referred to me as the “Tree Lady.” He was always a gentleman and treated me kindly no matter how furious and desk-pounding I became, because he knew my feelings came from the love for our parks and our children.
John Turner, as a newly hired police chief with young children of his own, was a leader in the public identification of child predators; to do so at that time was really sticking his neck out! Over and over again his main interest was always the protection of our citizens, their children, its businesses, and our city employees from criminal situations that would endanger their lives and property. His foresight in the prevention of crime was outstanding, and he received repeated public recognition and praise statewide.
Chief Turner always put the community first, wanting residents to feel secure and realize police officers were their friends protecting them. He helped in saving many youngsters from falling into crime by his fatherly concern for them. Turner’s experienced advice should be seriously considered. He should not be terminated for doing his job giving that advice. “Crime prevention” has proven to be money-saving for cities using it.
