Howard Price, a longtime Mariner High School track coach was, and still is, a class act. (Jan. 15 Prep Notebook, “Ex-Mariner track coach to be honored.”) Through his actions and words he could motivate you to do things you never could believe you could do.
But once you accomplished those things, you gained confidence in yourself and felt you could do anything. Year after year, kids from the same area would respond to his motivation and work ethic. And because of that, achieve great things both on and off the field.
A true mentor, who would take lessons from athletics and compare them to things to come … in life. Thirty years later, those comparisons are the gospel truth. I am proud to have been one of those kids in the 1980s, when we collectively had so much success at the local and state track and field championships.
I am especially proud that Howard is finally getting the recognition he so truly deserves by being inducted into the coaches hall of fame. His wife, Mary, deserves a medal for taking care of all of us. Howard’s influence compelled both David McFadden (teammate and current track coach at Mariner) and I to take on our own coaching careers in track and field.
Hopefully, some of Howard’s legacy can be carried on through us. I know I speak for hundreds of past athletes, coaches, by saying congratulations, you deserve this honor, you earned it.
