Coaches prepare kids for game of life

Regarding the Marysvilles schools athletic probe: The electronic survey recently taken at Marysville-Pilchuck High School showed that sportsmanship and team play were emphasized above winning. The student’s No. 1 priority was winning.

Although winning is an added value to high school athletics – and human nature is to want to win – commitment, teamwork, sportsmanship, discipline and quality individuals are an even more important function in life’s journey. As our young people move on in life, do we want them to remember the records their teams had, or do we want them to be outstanding citizens and leaders in our communities? I played athletics at MPHS. I played on winning baseball teams, winning wrestling teams and losing football teams. I could not tell you what the teams records were in the winning or losing situations, however, I can certainly tell you I learned about teamwork, sportsmanship and, most of all, how to handle setbacks. The reason I learned these valuable lessons was because of my high school coaches.

The coaches wanted to win as much as anyone else, however, if we were not going to come out on the winning end of the competition, they were certain they were going to teach us lessons we could carry with us about handling setbacks. They taught me how to handle myself in defeat as well as victory.

I am proud to have been associated with the Marysville-Pilchuck coaching staffs, past and present. I would like to thank them all for their time and efforts in helping our youth prepare for life’s game.
