I just had an interesting experience with the Uniform Medical Plan (UMP) folks! The other day I tried to call UMP customer service to let them know that certain billing matters will be the responsibility of Labor and Industries.
The first sign of trouble was the foreign accent of the person answering my call. This person could not understand what I was trying to tell him, so I asked to speak with a supervisor. The second sign of trouble happened when I asked the physical location of the call center. “The country of India,” the supervisor replied.
No wonder they could not understand me when I tried to notify UMP that recent medical billings are the responsibility of Labor and Industries. No pun intended, but the terms labor and industries and L&I were completely foreign to them.
Seems to me that if UMP is providing services to residents of and employees of the state of Washington, maybe there should be a call center staffed by somewhat proficient English speakers somewhere in the state of Washington!
