Letter writer Steve Haynes distorted his numbers in his March 19 letter, “Criminal justice: Dunshee’s right about new direction.” If the cost of crimes committed by folks on parole or in treatment programs is added to those programs, it far exceeds the cost of locking them up. Rehab only appears to be cheaper than jail because the cost burden is borne by victims, not taxpayers.
