The Dec. 10 comment by Douglas Klunder, attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union, that parents should refrain from eavesdropping on their out-of-control teenagers’ phone conversations and find other ways to manage the situation such as “restricting the use of the telephone” is stupid advice.
Either Mr. Klunder has never had to parent an out-of-control child, or he doesn’t understand the English language. Otherwise he would know what “out-of-control” teenager means – someone who is not willing to follow household or school rules, or even obey the laws of the community. So what makes Mr. Klunder think the child will refrain from using the household telephone just because it is “restricted” by their parents? This is a ludicrous and unrealistic assumption, as any parent who has had the painful experience of dealing with an out-of-control child already knows.
