Dan Varnell served his country and community

I was shocked and saddened to read in The May 7 Herald of the brutal and senseless murder of a very good man, Dan Varnell, in 1996. (I was living in Texas at the time of his death.)

If you have ever coached youth sports you know people like Dan. When I volunteered to coach my son’s U-10 soccer team, the Silver Lake Tigers, I needed help. I was hoping a parent would step-up. Dan was my guy. He would pick up kids for practice, give rides to games, keep track of all the soccer balls the kids kicked around, run lines when we didn’t have linesmen, put up the soccer nets, take down the soccer nets, make sure that each kid got an opportunity to participate in games. He was great. Youth sports doesn’t happen without people like Dan Varnell.

Dan’s service to his country as a Vietnam veteran, his service to his community as a soccer coach and his commitment and love to his family should always be remembered and valued.
