Another milestone in our nation’s history has been ignored by our media, both print and electronic.
National Medal of Honor Day, which was conceived in the state of Washington, has not received the recognition it so rightly deserves. March 25 has been set aside to honor those who are recipients of this nation’s highest award for valor, the Medal of Honor. The March 25 date was chosen because it was on March 25, (1863) that the first Medals of Honor were awarded to six members of Andrew’s Raiders during the Civil War.
Since the inception of this award in 1863, 3,448 medals have been awarded. To date, only 98 American heroes are still with us, seven of these recipients are residents of Washington State.
It is doubtful our schools through their history or social studies programs are even aware of the significance of this award.
Who knows, maybe next year some news editors will feel this may be an appropriate news story to remind readers and viewers of our American heroes.
