Devoid of strategic thought, planning

It looks like Tim Eyman has launched another “Scud” initiative. Titled Initiative 747, it does a great disservice to the name of Boeing’s famous jumbo jet. The “747” name is the only commonality they share. Boeing’s 747 was designed by talented engineers who understood the challenges and complexities of designing the world’s largest jetliner. They thoroughly researched the impact that developing such a product would have on the commercial airplane market. New technologies were developed and incorporated after numerous tests were conducted. Boeing employees worked together to overcome manufacturing obstacles to produce the final product that we know as the Boeing 747, which immediately established itself as the new standard for airline travel.

Tim Eyman’s initiative is completely devoid of such strategic thought and planning. There was very little research, no long-range impact assessments – no trials, nor tests. For all practical purposes, it is a Scud missile launched at our state Legislature. Tax-busting initiatives are appealing to many voters wary of high taxes and seeing little accomplished. I fully support reducing the tax burden on the citizens of Washington, but this initiative will cause more harm than good and not address the problems of wasteful government spending. It will only reduce the amount government can waste.

An initiative I would like to see sponsored would be one that repeals I-601. It is perhaps the most government-crippling and waste-generating initiative passed. I-601 generates a fear in managers that they must not come in under budget. To do so would mean that they will lose crucial funding the next year. This leads to wasteful spending as managers try to consume every cent of their budget so their funding is not slashed. “If we don’t spend it, we lose it” becomes the operating norm and the conduit for poorly planned wasteful spending. I-747 will only encourage more waste as government agencies fight for their share of a shrinking budget. I urge all voters to say no to these Scud initiatives and reject I-747. If you want lower taxes, vote for the candidates with the same goals, but don’t vote to cripple government with this Scud missile initiative. I-747 is a bad idea.
