Sen. Patty Murray’s and Snohomish County Executive Bob Drewel’s comments linking commuter rail service between Everett and Seattle with efforts to keep Boeing in Washington are further proof of how little our politicians know about the Boeing Co. and the people who work there.
Four commuter rail trips going from Everett to Seattle in the morning and four going from Seattle to Everett in the evening will not help Boeing or many of its employees. There are probably a few Boeing employees who work at Boeing Field and live in Snohomish County. Some of them may choose to use the new rail service. Other than that I cannot imagine any Boeing employees commuting by rail. Further, the new rail service will not help Boeing move parts between plants more efficiently. Boeing trucks parts between plants at night when the trains will not be operating.
Perhaps the state should run a train or two to Everett in the morning and leaving Everett in the evening. Then a significant number of Boeing employees at the Everett wide-body plant might use commuter rail. This would be a real attempt ease traffic congestion around a Boeing plant and hopefully something the executives back in Chicago would notice.
As it is now planned, the new commuter rail service will provide no benefit to the Boeing Co. From Boeing’s point of view the new service is another cost to be borne by Washington state taxpayers. Isn’t high taxation one of Boeing’s reasons for leaving this state?
