This letter is in response to Gene Kinnunen’s Dec. 15 letter, “Postal Service: They call these long holiday lines ‘service’?” He states that he spent 20 minutes of his lunchtime in line for a book of stamps. Stamps are available in vending machines at the post office and at most grocery stores. Why stand in line at the post office for stamps?
He also stated that one line closed because of a lunch break. Don’t postal employees deserve a lunch break just as much as he does?
Another thing he said was that three other employees walked by “oblivious” of others waiting in line. If you know anything about jobs in the postal service, you know that different people have different jobs and cannot freely go help where help is needed. The people he saw were probably carriers or workers with other jobs.
Don’t blame the poor workers for the long lines. They complain about them too. The postal service is short staffed in most craft positions and management doesn’t care.
I suggest writing your congressman to complain. It probably won’t do any good, but I know it won’t do any good to write a letter to the paper or call your local post office.
By the way, I think that postage stamps should be raised to 50 cents for first class and the bulk mailing rates should be doubled. We still have the cheapest rates in the world. No one says a thing about their other bills going up constantly, but let stamps go up a penny and it makes headline news.
Again, if you need only a book of stamps, go to the grocery store or use the vending machine.
