Another cop shot. Maybe we citizens become highly emotional when our police get killed trying to protect us, but I truly wonder whether these brave men and women are being sent into a line of fire for reasons not worthy of them. When “top dogs” in our society seem to escape any scrutiny, much less prosecution, when their acts are questionable, which will only encourage them to work the system for their own advantage, do they not create a culture of division, deprivation and violence on top of all they have plain gained?
Do we forget that police report to civilian leaders, as in politicians? And these leaders are supposed to be accountable to us? Our system is meant to protect us from being abused by our leaders, who rely on police to keep order. To focus on the police is to miss the mark. Persisting racism in our society is not going to be eradicated by shooting police. We might want to refocus on the causes.
In the meantime, could a few of those who make laws and issue orders step out from behind those wearing badges and serving as targets and take some responsibility for a change?
