Just when we thought Everett was evolving toward a classier upscale motif, I’ve concluded that Everett will always be an eyesore. Property values near town will decrease or remain unchanged (a real devaluation), and locals will most likely move away from a culture-less seedy town in search of something a little more pristine.
This letter is in response to Dec. 13 article entitled “Everett to raze historic buildings”. I have lived in the northwest for 32 years. Originally from Seattle, I now live in the historic district of Snohomish. From my perspective the message is clear – Everett wants commerce at any price. Rather than rewarding those in the area who have class and dignity with the novel idea of building new structures that compliment historic landmarks, the city of Everett has elected to erect a gaudy sports arena in order to attract (in part), culture-less, hockey fans.
I applaud Councilman Dan Warnock’s attempt to at least exercise proper damage-control to the proposed new structure. At this point they would be better off to erect a structure similar to the Experience Museum in Seattle. At least you could call it interesting. Having a ship-structured icon is nothing short of planting a Pirates of the Caribbean in town square.
The city of Everett has a bad case of Seattle-King-County-itis. City council members voted 6 to 1 to not represent the will of the majority, and they are desperate for an infusion of economic stimulus so badly that they are willing to tax the people and whore themselves out to a multi-purpose sports arena. How about this – have them save all the bricks from those buildings for me and I will bring them to the beautiful Historic District of Snohomish. Several new buildings are being planned in the next few years. I will make sure that new structures meet the demands of current economic growth while still preserving the integrity of the community.
