I write in response to the Dec. 28 letter to the editor “Sheriff’s Office: Efficiency, not OT, is what is needed.” It is necessary to point out that the examples listed as misuses of taxpayer money are anything but misuses. The BMW motorcycles were purchased because at the time, BMW was the only motorcycle manufacturer making anti-lock brakes, which are critical in controlling a motorcycle in rapid deceleration. That saves deputies’ lives and, in turn, taxpayer money.
As for the patrol boat, it was purchased with a Homeland Security grant from the federal government. No local property tax or sales tax revenues were used to acquire the boat. It is being used to bolster the safety of the Port of Everett and the greater North Sound coastline. It helps protect all of us.
The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office is well run, efficient and effective. I am proud to be a member, serving my community.
Tom Greene, Bureau Chief
Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office
