Regarding the Saturday guest commentary, “Help for kids who only get fed at school”: Mr. Deierling and his volunteers at the Marysville Food Bank are to be commended for their compassion, hard work and dedication in feeding “over 100” children who otherwise only get to eat at school. Mr. Deierling rightly states that more works needs to be done. Yes, it does, and I suggest we start with having Child Protective Services look into the fitness of the parents of those children. I find it unbelievable that any parent (and I assume many are single parents) who have access to a food bank such as at Marysville, cannot or will not provide even one simple meal per day for their children. I cannot imagine a mother who would feed herself, but rely on others to feed her child or children. Seems to me this fits the definition of “child neglect.” I still remember the darkest days near the end of World War II in Nazi Germany, when there simply was very little food for anyone — that my little brother and I ate while mother watched, because there wasn’t enough for all of us.
