In response to the Sunday letter, “Blaming white men is old tactic,” I am ashamed that a man who considers his political knowledge to be high enough would include the phrase “a non-white person who has a vagina” about Ms. Sotomayor. I wonder if his words may be of his own fear of racism and sexism. Race, class and gender all play a part in determining how our society is run and here in America, we live in a society that is largely based on gender hierarchy.
It is crucial that we ask ourselves: Will we ever be a society where every woman and man will put an end to discrimination based on sex, where we will all be feminists and begin to see equality? And please, let me remind everyone that feminism seeks to promote men and women. We have come a long way, especially having almost nominated a woman, Hillary Clinton, as a candidate for president. Although she didn’t win, we still made history, electing the first African-American president, Barack Obama.
It is imperative for me, as a woman, to know how important my role in my community, my country, and my world is; to fight for change and equality; promoting women, as a whole, no matter what race, religion, disability or sexual orientation. When I look around America, I know that there are women who are in charge, taking leadership positions, and working their way up the food chain.
