I can’t believe that it has happened again. This time it is the blatant announcement that AIG is going to pay millions of dollars in bonuses to its employees — some up to $3 million apiece. That they would have the audacity to do this after receiving $173 billion in bailout money is outrageous.
I have funds in AIG that are part of my retirement fund and have already been punched in the gut with the losses incurred. What happened to accountability with these bailout funds? Do these upper management people have no conscience? They already receive salaries that are way out of bounds.
Consider what people in life-and-death situations are paid, i.e. policemen, firefighters, nurses and doctors. These people in banking and investing, who are supposed to be trustworthy in handling our money, have lost their vision to do what is best for their customers and their country. They have been blinded by the almighty dollar sign, greed — no thought of how it is harming others.
It was my understanding that the government was going to keep track of how the bailout money was going to be spent. If not, the politicians should all be voted out of office. They already got us into this economic crisis by ignoring how the economy was taking a critical decline, especially this past year.
Any firm receiving bailout money should first sign a contract as to exactly how the money will be spent and held to it. Some independent, trustworthy examiner should then audit the books to see that the money is being spent as designated.
