I am not opposed to the idea of temporarily housing single mothers with children. I am, however, opposed to the location proposed by the city of Everett (“Group sues to stop south Everett Pallet shelter on vacant city property,” The Herald, July 29).
The site at Sievers Duecy Road and Madison makes no sense at all because, for example, grocery stores, save for mini-marts, are at least two miles away; there is only one bus route for that location; and there is a whole lot of commercial traffic from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. (and lots of coyotes at night). And what about the Casino Road gangs? Why not put the shelter closer to downtown where community services, city offices, federal offices, courts, as well as the children’s museum, restaurants, Angel of the Winds arena, Everett Station, grocery stores, etc., all are within walking distance?
It makes no sense at all for this site to be chosen except “we got this piece of land and we can’t do anything with it.” This location works well for a minimum security facility for low-level offenders, but as a safe place for single mothers to raise their children, not a chance.
Plus, “temporary” with optional “one-year extensions” means that the shelter is going to be there for quite a while because the need is never going to diminish once the word spreads about free housing.
